Luxury Tour of Mauritius
Mauritius is known for its white-sand beaches. And rightly so. But if you look beyond the palm trees, you’ll discover an island full of volcanic mountains, sugarcane fields, colorful markets, and flavors from all corners of the globe. On this tour, you’ll consciously leave your lounge chair behind every now and then. Don’t worry—it’ll be waiting for you.
You’ll start in the lush southwest, where Le Morne Brabant towers over the lagoon like a mighty sentinel. With a mountain guide, you’ll hike to a viewpoint that makes every bit of effort worthwhile. Next come the sacred shores of Grand Bassin, the forested gorges of Black River, and the almost otherworldly colors of Chamarel.
In Port Louis, let your appetite be your guide. Amid market stalls and small family-run shops, you’ll taste how African, Indian, Chinese, and European influences come together on a single plate. Further north, hop on an electric bike for a ride past sugarcane fields, colonial houses, and villages where daily life quietly goes on.
The finale takes place on the east coast. You’ll paddle through tranquil mangroves, snorkel above the reef, and sail to Île aux Cerfs. First, adventure; then, feet in the sand. Mauritius knows exactly how to end a trip.
Itinerary
-
After arriving, you’ll travel to the wooded hills of Chamarel, where you can immediately slow down a notch. Tropical gardens, winding roads, and the sound of birds provide the backdrop for your first few days. Time to settle in—both literally and figuratively.
The next morning, you’ll set out early with an experienced mountain guide for Le Morne Brabant. The hike takes about three to four hours and includes a few steeper sections, but at the top, a phenomenal view of the lagoon and the coral reef awaits. Put on your hiking boots, get your camera ready: this panorama isn’t something you’ll take for granted.
On a tour through the wild southwest, you’ll visit the volcanic crater of Trou aux Cerfs, the sacred lake of Grand Bassin, and the lush gorges of Black River Gorges. After a rum tasting and lunch at Rhumerie de Chamarel, you’ll end your tour at the waterfall and the Seven Colored Earth.
-
Today, you'll leave the lush southwest behind and travel via Port Louis to the north coast. From the Caudan Waterfront, a local guide will take you on a tour of the capital's culinary heart.
You’ll sample sweet and savory specialties at market stalls, family-run businesses, and small spots you’d probably walk right past on your own. Between bites, you’ll discover how different cultures have left their mark on the city and its cuisine. Be sure to follow your guide today, but feel free to trust your nose as well.
After the street food tour, you'll continue your journey north, where an intimate waterfront stay awaits you.
-
Sugarcane sways along the path as you hop on an electric bike from L’Aventure du Sucre. Along the way, Le Pouce and Pieter Both stand out against the horizon, and in the distance, the islands off the north coast come into view. Thanks to the electric assist, you’ll have plenty of energy left to enjoy the view. A smart move.
At the Ville Bague colonial estate, a picnic under centuries-old trees awaits you. Afterward, you’ll enjoy tea at Arline’s—a local resident who’s happy to introduce you to her neighborhood—and take a stroll through historic Pamplemousses. Mauritius on a human scale, far from the typical beach route.
The next day, you set the pace. Explore lively Grand Baie, take a boat tour, or settle down by the coast with a good book. Sometimes, not planning anything is the best plan.
-
After breakfast, a private transfer will take you to the east coast, where wide lagoons, tropical gardens, and sheltered coves define the landscape. The rest of the day is yours to explore your new accommodations and the beach. Shoes off, island mode on.
The next morning, you’ll hop into a kayak early for a trip to Île d’Ambre. You’ll paddle through mangroves, swim or snorkel in crystal-clear water, and hike past ruins that serve as reminders of the island’s history. The silence among the mangroves makes the inhabited coast seem suddenly very far away.
A day later, a completely different adventure awaits. You’ll sail across the lagoon by catamaran to Île aux Cerfs, with time along the way to snorkel above the coral reef. A barbecue lunch is served on board as turquoise waters and white sandbanks glide by. This is exactly the Mauritius of your dreams—but with a plate in your hand and the wind in your hair.
After one last breakfast, the transfer to the airport takes place on Day 10. One last look at the lagoon, and then: à bientôt, Mauritius.
