Luxury Tour of Réunion & Mauritius
During this self-guided tour, you’ll discover two islands, each with a distinct identity of its own. On La Réunion, you’ll follow a carefully planned route around the island, letting the landscape set the pace. You’ll travel from lush highlands and water-filled cirques—deeply carved mountain basins around the Piton des Neiges—to volcanic plains, mountain villages, and lagoons. The trip combines nature, local culture, and active experiences, without long days of driving or unnecessary stops. After this intense exploration, Mauritius offers a natural extension of the rhythm: fewer transfers, more peace and space to experience the island at your own pace. Together, the islands create a balanced journey where experience and relaxation complement each other.
Itinerary
-
Your journey begins in the lush eastern part of Réunion, where the landscape immediately sets the tone. From your accommodation in the highlands around Sainte-Anne, you’ll discover a lush region of forests, rivers, and waterfalls. The drive to the Cirque de Salazie follows the Rivière du Mât and reveals a succession of waterfalls along steep mountain walls. The contrast with the coast is striking: here, lush valleys and steep mountain walls dominate the landscape.
In Hell-Bourg, one of the island’s best-preserved Creole villages, you’ll stroll past traditional wooden houses with a local guide. You’ll gain insight into the architecture, daily life, and history of this region, where life has moved at a slower pace for generations. Along the way, there’s time for short stops along the coast or a visit to one of the vanilla plantations before you return to the tranquility of the interior.
-
Starting in the east, follow the coastline southward, where the landscape visibly changes. Lush greenery gives way to black lava fields and sweeping ocean views. You’ll pass small fishing harbors, rugged cliffs, and natural pools formed by centuries of volcanic activity. This route reveals a rougher, more powerful side of the island.
A highlight is exploring the Piton de la Fournaise. The road winds its way up through the Plaine des Sables, a vast, almost otherworldly landscape. From the Pas de Bellecombe, you look out over the crater and get a tangible sense of the forces that shaped Réunion. Those who want to experience the island from a different perspective can opt for a helicopter flight over Réunion’s spectacular landscapes
-
The drive to Cilaos is an experience in itself. You’ll wind your way into the heart of the island along a narrow mountain road with hundreds of curves. The air grows cooler, the landscape closes in around you, and towering peaks and deep valleys set the scene.
During your stay, you’ll explore both the village and the surrounding countryside. Viewpoints such as Roche Merveilleuse offer panoramic views of the cirque, while wooded areas like Bras Sec are perfect for hiking. Cilaos is also known for its local traditions: from winemaking and embroidery to cuisine. A cooking class before dinner brings this culture to life in a direct and informal way and creates a warm moment of connection.
-
After leaving the mountainous region, you’ll head down toward the west coast. The landscape opens up again, and the climate becomes noticeably milder. Along the way, you can stop in villages like l’Entre Deux or at natural formations along the coast, where the ocean crashes against black rocks.
On the west coast, you’ll explore the lagoon area on a guided kayak tour in transparent kayaks—a peaceful way to observe the underwater life without disturbing the environment. There will also be time for beach activities, short visits, and simply enjoying the ocean views. This part of the trip serves as a natural transition to the next island.
-
After your flight to Mauritius, you’ll immediately leave the busier coastal areas behind and head into the lush interior. In the hills around Chamarel, life moves at a different pace, with more space and tranquility. The surroundings are perfect for hiking, swimming, and short drives in your rental car. With no set itinerary, you’re free to set your own pace here.
-
For the final leg of the trip, you’ll head to the north coast of Mauritius. The focus shifts to the sea, the lagoon, and relaxation. You’re free to spend your days however you like: at the beach, on short boat trips, or simply doing nothing.
-
After a final breakfast by the sea, you’ll drive to the airport for your return flight. You’ll head home with memories of two fantastic islands.
