Itinerary
-
After arriving in Hanoi, you’ll take a private transfer to Halong Bay. You’ll board your ship and begin the cruise with lunch and an initial tour of the bay. In the afternoon, you’ll sail among the limestone formations and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
The next day, you’ll continue exploring Halong Bay. In Viet Hai village, you’ll go ashore for a short bike ride or walk through the village, which is nestled among limestone hills and accessible only via narrow roads.
Later in the day, you’ll head toward Lan Ha Bay, a quieter part of the area where floating fishermen’s houses dot the water. The locals raise fish here in nets and ponds built around their homes. Your exploration of the bay concludes with a visit to Dark & Bright Cave, where you’ll paddle through a low cave by kayak or local rowboat to a secluded lagoon.
-
You’ll leave the bay and continue inland along the Kinh Thay and Day Rivers. Here, the landscape shifts to a more authentic Vietnam, where you can observe daily life along the water. During excursions, you’ll go ashore in villages such as Thanh Ha, where you’ll attend a private performance of water puppet theater, a tradition that dates back centuries.
-
The ship follows the Lower Red River and the Day River. The landscape becomes more rural, with rice fields and small villages nestled close to the river. In one of the villages, you’ll visit artisans who still weave silk by hand. The looms are often set up inside the homes themselves, where generations of families have practiced the same craft. At local markets, you’ll see how the region functions as an agricultural area. Vegetables, herbs, rice, and fish from the surrounding fields and rivers are sold here daily.
-
In Ninh Binh, you’ll take a boat trip through a landscape of rice paddies and limestone cliffs, often described as “Halong on land.” The trip takes you past caves and through narrow waterways, offering views of a typical northern Vietnamese landscape. In the villages around Ninh Binh, you’ll see various traditional crafts. Some families produce rice paper, while others weave water hyacinth into baskets and mats. In the evening, you’ll hear Chau Van music, a spiritual singing style.
-
You’ll arrive in Hanoi, where you’ll visit the city’s most important cultural and historical sites, including the Temple of Literature and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. During a walk through the old quarter, you’ll experience everyday city life, with small shops, street food, and markets. You’ll also visit a local coffee shop, where you’ll learn more about Vietnamese coffee culture and different brewing methods.
The next day, you’ll visit Bat Trang, a village that has been famous for its pottery production for centuries. In the workshops, you’ll see how potters shape clay and use kilns that have sometimes been in the same family for generations.
-
You’ll continue your journey to the less-visited regions north of Hanoi, where rice paddies and traditional villages dominate the landscape. In Duong Lam, you’ll visit one of the best-preserved historic villages in Northern Vietnam. The houses are built of laterite stone and line narrow streets that follow the village’s original layout.
Later, you’ll visit villages where carpenters and blacksmiths work using techniques that have been passed down through generations. The trip ends in Viet Tri, after which you’ll head back to Hanoi—the perfect base from which to explore Central or Southern Vietnam or begin your journey home.

The highlight of our trip:
“This isn’t a traditional cruise, but rather a river expedition. Water levels and currents sometimes determine the exact route, which means every trip on these rivers is just a little bit different.”

Featured stay
Pandaw Cruises
During this trip, you’ll stay aboard a ship operated by Pandaw, a company that has been operating small expedition vessels on the rivers of Asia for many years. The ships are intentionally compact and designed for shallow waterways, allowing them to travel further upstream than larger cruise ships.
The cabins are finished in teak and brass and open onto large windows overlooking the river. From your cabin or the open deck, you can watch the landscape glide by: fishing boats, villages along the riverbank, and the daily traffic on the water.
In the restaurant, you can enjoy a refined culinary selection featuring Vietnamese and international dishes. Due to the limited number of passengers, the ship feels more like a small expedition vessel than a traditional cruise ship.
Featured experiences
Kayaking through the Dark & Bright Cave
By kayak or traditional boat, you’ll visit caves such as the Dark & Bright Cave, one of the most unique spots in Halong Bay. By kayak or traditional rowboat, you’ll navigate through a low cave that opens into a secluded lagoon, completely surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. The contrast between the dark cave and the open water makes this place truly special.
Water puppet theater in a village pond
In the village of Thanh Ha, you’ll attend a performance of traditional Vietnamese water puppet theater. The wooden puppets move across the surface of a pond while musicians play on the bank. This form of theater originated centuries ago in the rice fields of the Red River Delta.
Rowing boat through the karst landscape of Ninh Binh
In Ninh Binh, you’ll board a small rowboat steered by local rowers. The route takes you past rice paddies and through low limestone caves that connect the valleys. Thanks to the leisurely pace, you’ll see the landscape change as you continue down the river.
