Luxury Tour of Southern Tanzania
The sun has barely risen, and Nyerere is already awake. Elephants are making their way through the tall grass; somewhere in the distance, you can hear the deep rumble of a hippopotamus; and on the riverbank, a crocodile is shamelessly basking in the sun. No convoy of safari vehicles blocking your view. Just water, bush, and plenty of Africa.
This tour takes you to southern Tanzania, where safaris take on a surprisingly diverse character. From Dar es Salaam, you’ll fly to Nyerere National Park. For four nights, an exclusive safari camp in the heart of the park will serve as your base. You’ll drive deep into the landscape in a 4x4, take guided walking tours through the bush, and cruise along the waterways among crocodiles and hippos.
Next, the bush gets you ready for tropical beaches. A short flight takes you to Zanzibar. It’s not a typical large beach resort, but an intimate retreat on the southeast coast. You can gaze out over the Indian Ocean, explore the reef at low tide, or simply let the day slip by from your own plunge pool.
Itinerary
-
Touchdown in Dar es Salaam. Your private driver will be waiting for you at the airport and will take you to your hotel in the city. You don’t have to do a thing today. Just settle in—literally and figuratively—and look forward to what starts tomorrow: the bush.
-
After breakfast, you’ll fly from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park. It’s a short flight, but the scenery is completely different. Roads and buildings fade away, giving way to river branches, lakes, and vast stretches of bush.
The next four nights will be all about wildlife, but never in exactly the same way. From an open 4x4, you’ll head out in search of elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions, and—with a little luck—African wild dogs. Sometimes the wildlife appears after just a few minutes; other times, it takes searching, scanning, and listening. That’s precisely the charm of a safari.
You’ll also get to know Nyerere in a whole new way from the water. During a boat safari, you’ll cruise past lush green banks while hippos curiously peek out of the water and crocodiles lie motionless in the sun. When conditions allow, you’ll even leave the jeep behind entirely and head into the bush on foot with an experienced guide and ranger.
-
One last morning traveling through the beautiful natural landscape of Nyerere toward the airstrip. From the national park, you’ll fly directly to Zanzibar, where the Indian Ocean awaits you.
Upon arrival, you’ll be taken by private transfer to the island’s southeast coast. You’ll swap your safari hat for flip-flops, and from your villa, you’ll look out over shades of blue that seem to change constantly.
-
You’ll savor your last tropical flavors before your private driver takes you to the airport. You’ll leave with unforgettable safari memories and probably way too many photos. Just as it should be.

Our highlight from the trip
“For me, Nyerere has that little something extra. Heading into the bush by 4x4 in the morning and later cruising among the hippos… two completely different safaris in a single day. And hardly any other jeeps in sight. Wonderful…”

Featured experiences
On the hunt for wildlife in a 4×4
From an open 4x4, you’ll follow tracks past lakes, forests, and open plains, with a guide who knows where the park hides its surprises. Nyerere is known for its elephants, lions, buffalo, and hippos, but it’s an encounter with African wild dogs that really makes a game drive special.
On foot through the bush
A walking safari changes the way you view nature. Suddenly, it’s not just the large animals that matter, but also tracks, plants, sounds, and details that are easily missed from a vehicle. Accompanied by an experienced guide and an armed ranger, you’ll venture into the wilderness.
Safari on the Water
From the water, Nyerere takes on a completely different look. You’ll cruise past overgrown banks where crocodiles bask in the sun and hippos watch from the water, while ospreys circle above the river branches. Especially toward the end of the day, when the light softens over the water, this is one of the most beautiful ways to experience the park.
