Customized Tour of Senegal

Teranga. The Senegalese word for hospitality is difficult to translate. It means that a place is always made for you, that a single large dish is shared without hesitation, and that a meeting can easily last a little longer than planned. You don’t just hear it—you feel it throughout your entire trip.

Your adventure begins on the Atlantic coast, among colorful pirogues and fishermen bringing their catch ashore. In the Sine Saloum, you’ll glide through a maze of mangroves as hundreds of birds return to their roosts. A little later, you’ll find yourself gathered around the cooking pot with a local family and discover that eating here is much more than just a meal. It’s an invitation.

In the east, Senegal becomes more rugged. You’ll go on a safari in Niokolo-Koba, hike to the Dindéfelo waterfalls, and meet Bedik and Bassari communities amid green hills and remote villages. Then, everything turns a tropical shade of green in Casamance. Rice paddies, palm groves, and winding bolongs accompany you all the way to Cap Skirring.

Fourteen days filled with untamed nature and heartfelt encounters. And thanks to Senegalese teranga, it sometimes feels as if you’re not just visiting, but coming home for a while.

Itinerary

Your journey begins peacefully at the La Somone lagoon, surrounded by tropical greenery and water. The next day, the fishing port of Mbour immediately immerses you in everyday life. Colorful pirogues glide onto the beach, baskets full of fish are carried ashore, and merchants haggle over the catch. This is Senegal as it is lived every day.
On the Sine Saloum, you’ll sail past the shell island of Diorom Boumag to the famous Reposoir des Oiseaux. As the sun turns the water golden, hundreds of pelicans, herons, and cormorants return to their roost. It’s rush hour—but with wings.
The next day, you’ll cook and dine with a Senegalese family. The experience concludes with the “three teas” ceremony: three glasses, each with its own flavor, and above all, enjoyed without rushing. Teranga in its purest form.
A longer drive takes you through the vast landscapes of eastern Senegal to the UNESCO-protected Niokolo-Koba National Park. At the entrance, you’ll transfer to a 4x4, which will take you deep into the park to Niokolodge. The drive there takes some time, but the reward awaits you in the heart of the bush.
During the safari, you’ll join an experienced guide in searching for buffalo, antelopes, warthogs, monkeys, and countless bird species. Every footprint in the sand or rustle among the trees could be the start of a special encounter. Between safaris, you’ll enjoy the tranquility of the lodge. As evening falls, the sounds of African nature take over, and an endless starry sky appears above you. West Africa clearly has its own safari story.
In the far southeast, Senegal’s landscape suddenly becomes more rugged. Following in the footsteps of the gold prospectors of Mako, you’ll travel to Kédougou and hike through lush greenery to the Dindéfelo waterfalls. Want to cool off? Then take a dip in the natural pool at the base of the waterfall.
Next, you’ll head into Bedik country. During visits to traditional villages, you’ll learn about the customs, stories, and spiritual traditions of their inhabitants. Between Andjel and Iwol, you’ll hike for about two hours through the green, rolling hills, followed by a local lunch in Bandafassi. After all, the most memorable encounters are rarely found along the main road.
Bassariland also surprises visitors with its rolling landscapes, charming villages, and traditional dances. After that, the green hills gradually give way to the vast savannas as you head toward Tambacounda.
Via Ziguinchor, you’ll reach the lush, tropical Casamance region. You’ll discover the Diola heritage and travel to the traditional kingdom of Oussouye, where centuries-old social structures and customs still thrive. Along the way, you’ll visit a cashew nut producer and local potters. In Mlomp, you’ll admire the unique impluvium houses, true masterpieces of traditional architecture.
From Cap Skirring, you’ll travel by pirogue past rice fields, mangroves, and remote villages. You’ll see colorful fishing boats returning to Elinkine and discover, around Cachouane, how fishing and the harvesting of mangrove oysters shape daily life.
The final days will take you to charming villages, enormous kapok trees, and the vast beaches of Cap Skirring. Ba beneen yoon, Senegal—until next time.
