9-day self-guided tour of Senegal
You don’t discover Senegal through long stretches of travel, but through gentle transitions: from the Atlantic coast to the mangroves, from urban history to village life. At the heart of it all is Teranga, a concept from Wolof, Senegal’s national language, which literally means “hospitality.” You’ll experience this genuine Senegalese hospitality here every day. This tour combines a few key destinations—La Somone, the Sine-Saloum, and Palmarin—with carefully selected side trips. You’ll travel with a private driver and guide, covering manageable distances, and stay in the same place for several nights at a time. This allows you to experience the country at a leisurely pace, without constantly packing and unpacking.
Itinerary
-
After arriving in Senegal, you’ll drive south to La Somone, where you’ll spend your first few days by the coast. The surroundings are green and open, with the ocean just a short walk away. From this peaceful base, you’ll explore Dakar and visit the former slave island of Gorée. In the capital, you’ll gain insight into daily life, the country’s dynamics, and its recent history, while Gorée offers space for reflection, with its colonial architecture and the Maison des Esclaves.
-
After your stay on the coast, you’ll leave Somone behind and head toward Lac Rose. You’ll explore the lake by boat and see how salt is still harvested the traditional way today. Then you’ll continue your journey to the Sine-Saloum, where you’ll settle in for several nights in Fimela. You’ll explore forests and villages, meet local communities, and gain insight into crafts and daily life. A pirogue trip through the delta takes you deep into the mangrove landscape, where water, birds, and fishermen set the rhythm.
-
From Fimela, you’ll continue on toward the Atlantic coast. Along the way, you’ll visit Joal and the unique shell island of Fadiouth, where village life, religious tolerance, and traditions come together. In the afternoon, you’ll reach Palmarin, where you’ll conclude your journey by the sea. The days here have been intentionally left open. You can stroll along the beach, explore the nearby salt flats, or simply enjoy the silence and open space, without a set itinerary.
-
You bid farewell to Palmarin and drive leisurely toward the airport. What remains are memories of mangroves, villages, and encounters, along with that sense of welcome so characteristic of Senegal. With Teranga as your guiding thread, you bring your journey to a close.

Our highlight of the trip
“For me, the pirogue ride in the Sine-Saloum is the quiet heart of this journey. You glide slowly through mangrove channels where birds, fishermen, and water come together. There’s no spectacle, just a rare sense of peace that stays with you for a long time.”

Gorée Island, an island of memories
The boat crossing makes the transition palpable. On the island, you walk past colonial houses and squares—a place that reminds us of the suffering of the African people. The history is told in a clear and sober manner and takes on meaning through the place itself.
Pirogue ride in the delta
Sitting in a wooden pirogue, you glide through narrow waterways. Mangrove roots jut out of the water, birds take flight, and fishermen pass by. The surroundings determine what you see—and, above all, when.
