Luxury self-drive South Africa

South Africa is a country that continues to surprise, every day anew. During this self-drive tour, you will drive through vineyards, coastlines, mountain passes, and vast nature reserves, with the road itself becoming an essential part of the experience. You will combine bustling Cape Town with tranquil nature reserves, refined gastronomy with pure safari moments. Freedom is central, supported by carefully selected accommodations where comfort and location go hand in hand.

South Africa itinerary

  • Upon arrival, pick up your rental car and drive to your accommodation in Cape Town. You will have plenty of time to explore the city and its surroundings: from the V&A Waterfront to Signal Hill and the beaches around Camps Bay. Culture lovers will want to visit Bo-Kaap, District Six, and Robben Island. A drive across the Cape Peninsula to see the penguins in Simon's Town and watch the sunset at Cape Point is also a must.

  • Today you will drive to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, the heart of South African wine culture. You will stroll through historic streets, discover small boutiques, and enjoy lunch in refined restaurants. The highlight is the Wine Tram, which takes you on a leisurely tour of some of the most beautiful wineries.

  • Via Hermanus and Walker Bay, you will reach a region where nature takes center stage. Depending on your travel package, you will stay at Grootbos Nature Reserve or De Hoop Nature Reserve. You will explore cliffs, beaches, and nature reserves, with the chance to spot whales from land (June–November). Guided walks, lodge activities, and pure tranquility set the pace.

  • You travel via Route 62, one of the most beautiful roads in the country, towards the semi-desert of the Klein Karoo. Along the way, mountain passes, valleys, and small villages alternate. Oudtshoorn is known for its ostrich farms and is the base for the impressive Cango Caves. A drive over the Swartberg Pass is one of the absolute highlights of the route.

  • The journey continues along the green Garden Route, with its forests, lagoons, and rugged coastlines. You will explore Knysna, hike in Tsitsikamma National Park, and enjoy beaches and viewpoints. Optional activities range from boat trips and hikes to golfing or canopy tours. Plettenberg Bay also offers space to slow down.

  • In the Eastern Cape, you will conclude your journey with safaris in a private game reserve. Accompanied by a ranger, you will search for the Big 5 during morning and evening safaris. You will stay in a comfortable lodge, often with a view of the river or savannah. Evenings end around the fire or on your terrace, with the sounds of the African bush in the background.

  • After a final morning safari, you drive to Port Elizabeth. You return the rental car and begin your journey home. A tour full of contrasts and impressions comes to an end.
