Luxury self-drive tour through the heart of Croatia

This self-drive tour takes you right through the heart of Croatia and ends at the Adriatic Sea. You’ll start in Zagreb, a city characterized by Central European architecture, parks, and a vibrant food scene. From there, you’ll drive south through vast forests, mountain ranges, and national parks, with stops that each reveal a different landscape and story: bear territory in Gorski Kotar, limestone mountains in Velebit, and waterfalls in Plitvice.

As you travel further, the scenery shifts toward the sea. Historic cities like Zadar and Šibenik offer culture and heritage, while islands like Pag and Dugi Otok show how wind, salt, and the sea shape life. The journey ends in Dalmatia, with Split serving as a base for exploring the islands of Vis and Hvar. You’ll be driving yourself, but you’ll follow a carefully planned route with manageable distances, meaningful stops, and plenty of time to truly experience each region.

Itinerary

  • After arriving, you’ll drive to Zagreb at your own pace. The city unfolds in layers: the medieval upper town, wide boulevards from the Habsburg era, and a contemporary café scene that brings squares and parks to life. Together with a local guide, you’ll explore the historic center and gain insight into Zagreb’s role as a bridge between Central Europe and the Balkans.

  • You leave the city and drive into the green heart of Croatia. In Fuzine, you’ll stroll around Lake Bajer, a peaceful spot where locals gather. In the afternoon, you’ll head deep into the forest by jeep for a guided bear-watching tour. You’ll wait in silence at a professional observation post, right in the middle of the animals’ habitat. Watch, listen, and experience how humans and nature coexist here.

  • Mountain roads lead you to the Velebit Mountains, a rugged natural boundary between the coast and the interior. You’ll hike along the Premuzic Trail, a scenic route with minimal elevation changes, offering views of the sea and islands. Then you’ll head toward Plitvice, where you’ll spend a full day exploring the national park. You’ll follow wooden paths along sixteen lakes, take a boat ride across Lake Kozjak, and end at the large waterfall in the lower canyon landscape.

  • After visiting the Paklenica Gorge, you’ll arrive in Zadar. With a guide, you’ll explore Roman ruins, medieval churches, and modern installations like the Sea Organ, where wind and waves come together to create music. The next day, you’ll drive to the island of Pag, known for its salty landscape and distinctive terroir. You’ll visit an award-winning cheese farm and the centuries-old olive groves of Lun, where wild olive trees have withstood wind and weather for generations.

  • Take the ferry to Dugi Otok, a long, narrow island with high cliffs on one side and tranquil bays on the other. Explore the island at your own pace. From there, board a private boat to venture into the Kornati archipelago: a labyrinth of barren islands, crystal-clear waters, and sheltered anchorages. You’ll plan the route with your skipper, depending on the weather and how you feel.

  • Once back on the mainland, you’ll discover Šibenik, a compact city with a stunning cathedral and several fortresses. In Split, take your time. Staying for several nights allows you to truly explore Diocletian’s Palace, visit museums, and experience life by the sea. You’ll conclude with a private boat trip to Vis, the Blue Cave of Biševo, and Hvar. A long day on the water and, at the same time, a summary of everything that defines this journey.

The highlight of our trip

“For me, the private boat tour through the Kornati Archipelago was the highlight of this trip. From Dugi Otok, you sail into an international park accessible only by boat, with dozens of uninhabited islands and crystal-clear water. You decide together with the skipper where to dock. An exceptionally authentic experience.”
