9-day individual tour of Senegal

You don't discover Senegal in long stretches, but in gentle transitions: from the Atlantic coast to the mangroves, from urban history to village life. At the heart of it all is Teranga, a concept from Wolof, the national language of Senegal, which literally means 'hospitality'. You will experience this genuine Senegalese hospitality here every day. This tour combines a few fixed anchor points, La Somone, the Sine-Saloum and Palmarin, with well-chosen excursions. You will travel with a private driver and guide, covering manageable distances, and stay in the same place for several nights at a time. This allows you to experience the country with attention, without constantly packing and unpacking.

Travel itinerary

  • After arriving in Senegal, you will drive south to La Somone, where you will spend the first few days on the coast. The surroundings are green and open, with the ocean within walking distance. From this peaceful base, you will explore Dakar and visit the former slave island of Gorée. In the capital, you will gain insight into the daily life, dynamics, and recent history of the country, while Gorée offers space for reflection, with its colonial architecture and the Maison des Esclaves.

  • After your stay on the coast, you leave Somone behind and drive towards Lac Rose. You explore the lake by boat and see how salt is still harvested today using traditional methods. You then continue your journey to Sine-Saloum, where you settle in Fimela for several nights. You will explore forests and villages, meet local communities, and gain insight into crafts and daily structures. A pirogue trip through the delta will take you deep into the mangrove landscape, where water, birds, and fishermen set the pace.

  • From Fimela, you will continue your journey towards the Atlantic coast. Along the way, you will visit Joal and the unique shell island of Fadiouth, where village life, religious tolerance, and traditions visibly come together. In the afternoon, you will reach Palmarin, where you will end your journey by the sea. The days here have been deliberately kept free. You can walk along the beach, explore the salt pans in the area, or simply enjoy the silence and open space, without a fixed program.

  • You bid farewell to Palmarin and drive leisurely toward the airport. What remains are images of mangroves, villages, and encounters, and the feeling of welcome that is so characteristic of Senegal. With Teranga as the common thread, you conclude your journey.

Our highlight of the trip

"For me, the pirogue trip in the Sine-Saloum is the quiet heart of this journey. You sail slowly through mangrove channels where birds, fishermen, and water intersect. There is no spectacle, but a rare tranquility that stays with you for a long time."

Featured hotels

The Mango Trees of Guéroéo, La Somone

You will stay in a sprawling tropical garden where rooms are scattered among mango trees and palm trees. Each accommodation has its own terrace, allowing you to experience the rhythm of the day outdoors, from the first birds to the evening breeze. The proximity of the ocean and the lagoon ensures a peaceful start to your journey.

Souimanga Lodge, Sine-Saloum

Souimanga Lodge is located on the edge of the water and mangroves, in the middle of the delta landscape. You will sleep in lodges built with local materials, with a view of the surrounding nature. When the sun goes down, silence returns and the environment is defined by light, water, and sounds from the mangroves.

Yokan Lodge, Palmarin

The intimate Yokan Lodge is family-run and located between the ocean and savannah landscapes, at the gateway to the beautiful Sine-Saloum region. The suites are bright and spacious, with views of the garden or sea. It is a pleasant place to slow down and end your trip at a leisurely pace.

Experiences in the spotlight

Île de Gorée, island of remembrance

The boat trip makes the transition tangible. On the island, you walk past colonial houses and squares, a place that reminds us of the suffering of the African population. History is told clearly and soberly and is given meaning by the place itself.

Pirogue sailing in the delta

Sitting in a wooden pirogue, you glide through narrow waterways. Mangrove roots protrude from the water, birds fly up, and fishermen sail by. The environment determines what you see and, above all, when.

Village life on a shell island

You cross a wooden bridge to Fadiouth, an island built entirely from shells. Village life takes place along barns on stilts and a shell graveyard where religions coexist.
