Luxury Tour of Northeast Brazil
This road trip through northeastern Brazil takes you through one of the most extraordinary coastal regions in the world. You’ll travel from the colonial city of São Luís to the dunes and lagoons of Lençois Maranhenses, via the open-sea delta of Delta do Parnaíba, to the sandy plains of Jericoacoara and the coast of Taíba.
Along the way, you’ll see how what appears to be a desert is dotted with freshwater lagoons, how mangrove forests flow into the ocean, and how wide beaches give way to dune ridges. You’ll travel by boat, 4x4, and private transfer, discovering a region where natural wonders, local culture, and simple yet refined cuisine come together seamlessly.
Itinerary
-
Upon arrival at Fortaleza Airport, you’ll be taken by private transfer to your hotel on Beira Mar. From your room, you’ll look out over the Atlantic Ocean, where fishing boats bob gently on the water and the promenade slowly comes to life.
-
After a domestic flight, you’ll arrive in São Luís. During a guided walk through the historic center (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), you’ll discover the distinctive Portuguese azulejo facades, narrow streets, and colonial mansions. You’ll visit the Palácio dos Leões and walk along Rua Portugal to Praia Grande. The compact city center is easy to explore on foot and offers a direct glimpse into daily city life.
-
You’ll travel overland to Barreirinhas and then continue by boat along the Preguicas River toward Atins. Along the way, you’ll see mangroves, small settlements, and the Mandacaru lighthouse, which offers views of the river and dunes.
You’ll drive into the national park in a 4x4. After a short walk across the dunes, you’ll reach the seasonal lagoons that have formed among the sand. You’ll have time to swim and explore the various lagoons. As evening approaches, the light changes and the dunes turn golden. A simple picnic at sunset wraps up the day.
-
Today you’ll continue your journey to the Parnaíba Delta, one of the world’s few open-sea deltas. You’ll take a boat through narrow channels between sandbars and mangroves. At the end of the day, you’ll witness hundreds of scarlet ibises returning to their roost—a brief but impressive natural spectacle at sunset.
-
You’ll travel by 4x4 to Jericoacoara, taking a ferry across the Coreau River. The route takes you past villages, dunes, and lagoons.
The next day, you’ll explore the area by buggy. You’ll stop at Lagoa Do Paraiso and Lagoa Azul, where hammocks hang over the shallow water. Along the way, you’ll pass viewpoints where the dunes meet the ocean. Time to swim, enjoy a local lunch, and take in the scenery.
-
After these active days, you’ll head to Taíba Beach for three nights by the sea. This is a chance to relax after the hustle and bustle of the past few days. You’re free to spend your days as you like: strolling along the beach at low tide, relaxing by the pool, or enjoying an optional massage. The ocean remains the backdrop, but the pace is deliberately slower.
-
After breakfast, you’ll be taken to the Fortaleza airport. You’ll conclude a journey that unfolded step by step, from river to ocean.
